Why I sold my rolex submariner
Let’s get this one out of the way first. My wife did not ask, force or suggest I sell my Rolex. This was all my doing and even she said she was in the dark until I’d done the deed. So there you go dear, record straight. How was I to know she’d watch the video while I was at work.
Anyway, speaking of views. Despite me being pretty lazy of late this episode has grown tremendously in the few days since it went live. I know through past experience that putting a Rolex episode out there gets the clicks, but I tend to only publish my story, shying away from too much click bait. I say click bait. It can’t be helped if Rolex is what draws everyone in.
My YouTube Style
To those new to the channel that are just dipping in, welcome all. Most of you will know I like to go on a little ramble before getting to the point. Hell, sometimes I don’t even get to the point. So feel free to fast forward to the Rolex bit, but if you watch the whole video, it will take you on a ride of regret follwed by redemption and satisfaction.
I initially menionted my Seamaster 120 sale back in 2019 as that’s the one loss I regretted recently, not the Rolex. Other than wearing it to work, me and the Subby didn’t get up to much. No capers or laddish behaviour. No family or work occassions other than being layed off, again. So no regrets. The only Rolex regret I have is not buying the Millgaus at list when I had it in my hands back in April 2019. The one that got away.
Omega Seamaster 120 Life
I bought the Omega Seamaster 120 back in 2001 after moving from Leeds down to the Midlands to secure a job in the motor industry. It was also the year I turned 30. I had a BMW on the drive, a lovelly wife, no kids and the start of a new career, it was all ahead of me. The Omega was my one watch for life. Didn’t need 2 or 3. Subsequently, we had two boys, I achieved promotions at work, we moved house and suffered loss in the family. Me and that watch went through a lot together. Never took it on holiday though oddly, favouring one of my old Sekonda’s.
No Regrets
So there is a tinge of regret to selling that Seamaster, but ultimately when my dad passed in 2018 at 73 I started to figure stuff out. Started to be more impulsive and just getting on with life. I bought a few more watches with some money he left me and I thought, I don’t actually like the Seamaster any more. It’s old fashioned, dated in it’s styling. I wasn’t wrong then and I’m not now. The £900 I made from it went into the purchase of the Submariner. Only a small contribution, but a contribution none the less. But lets not imagine that the spirit of the watch somehow magicically made it’s way into the Rolex. It didn’t. It was great to get called in to to secure it and the guy at Goldsmiths was pretty nice, but we were then plunged into lockdown with no opportunity to enjoy it other than looking at it.
So there you have it. Hopefully a little extra context around the video. I didn’t spend all the proceeds from sale. In fact I’ve since saved all the money back. I’d like to think a Rolex GMT Master 2 will materialise at some point. Come on Goldsmiths. It’s funny, some of the comments have asked if I think I’ll be blacklisted for selling and that I ‘flipped’ the watch. Maybe if I’d done that back in Feb 2020 when I bought it, but after nearly 4 years, nah.
If you made it this far, I hope you like my style and subscribe to the channel.
